Top 10 countries with the most satellites in space

The United States leads the world with 8,530 satellites, largely due to SpaceX's Starlink constellation. Russia and China follow with 1,559 and 906 respectively, with the UK also a major player with 763 satellites. India's ISRO and private sector contribute 136, with plans for rapid expansion, cementing their role in the new space environment.

Nations with most satellites 2025: The number of the active satellites can be seen in Motion, according to the satellite tracking site Orbiting Now, there are approximately 12,952 objects orbiting our planet Earth, as on Sunday.

Of this this immense figure, 145 satellites have so far been launched in the orbit of the earth in 2025 as according to Orbiting Now. The satellites are normally positioned on various orbits of the earth like the Geostationary orbit (GEO), the medium Earth orbit (MEO), and the low earth orbit (LEO).

Small satellite mission integrator Kongsberg Nano Avionics pointed out that small satellites have taken over the LEO whereas large satellites are dominant in geostationary orbit (GEO) and in medium Earth orbit (MEO). It also pointed out that the countries or multinational organizations where the operating satellites are registered are 105.

Though the amount of satellites is sure to go up in the future, we examine the top 10 countries as far as the number of satellites in orbit go:

    1. United States

According to Statista.com, by November 2024 the United States had the most satellites in orbit, 8530, of any country or entity. The magnitude is fueled by a combination of government agencies (NASA, DoD), military populations, and privately run corporations, of which SpaceX, whose Starlink alone numbers more than 7,400 representatives.

    2. Russia

Russia had intended to have 2,600 satellites in-orbit communications and Earth remote sensing satellites by 2036, Roscosmos State Space Corporation CEO Yury Borisov had said in 2024 with 35 percent of the satellites belonging to commercial satellites. Today Russia has a 244-satellite in-orbit constellation, he said according to numerous reports. As indicated by n2yo.com, Russia has 1,559 online satellites in the orbit.

    3. China

There are approximately 906 satellites in the Earth orbit that are owned by China, as shown according to the information indicated on n2yo.com which include government satellite, military and commercial satellites. This year, the country launched the big ones, such as CERES-1 in March, Long March-6/6A Qianfan batches, or Guowang.

    4. United Kingdom

Based on the figures that the United Kingdom parliament has provided, there are currently 763 satellites that have been launched on an orbit, all of which belong to the UK. The majority of these satellites are used in military ISR, communications and commercial/scientific purposes and technology demonstrations.

    5. Japan

Japan has currently approximately 203 orbiting satellites as n2yo.com shows, which span into government, military, science, and inventive affairs. Among these, there are approximately 5 functioning QZSS navigation satellites in the country successfully (as of Feb-Mar 2025), and the country is planning to raise it to 7 by March 2026, as reported.

    6. France

France also has an eclectic fleet of more than 100 satellites that are used to accomplish military intelligence, high-resolution earth imagery, and space-defence demonstration. Due to the launch of a new range of satellites and most notably the CO3D, YODA and others within France, the country can also strengthen its sovereignty in the European space environment according to the France defence government website.

    7. India

As of 31 December 2024, there are approximately 136 (with 4 private operators or academia outfits) satellites launched in Earth orbit by India in the Earth orbit, according to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). In addition to the 22 current satellites in the LEO, 32 in GEO, there are deep space missions, that is, Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter and Aditya-L1 in operation.

Such satellites are primarily used in navigation, communication, observation, scientific and tech demos application. A PTI report quoting ISRO Chairman V Narayanan has said that India will augment its fleet of satellites in next 3 years with 100- 150 new satellites being added to the orbit boosting the national security.

    8. Germany

According to the information on n2yo.com, Germany is in possession of approximately 82 active satellites in orbit, including government, scientific, defense and others. According to Vogon Today, the nation is preparing to make a revolutionary step forward in its military space powers with Bundeswehr planning an ambitious program to see at least one of its own satellite constellations delivered by 2029.

    9. Canada

According to n2yo site, Canada has already positioned approximately 64 satellites into space and the activities of these satellites were compiled with earthscan, communication, scientific and technological intentions. The biggest satellite companies which are based in Canada are Telesat, MDA, GHGSat and Northstar. According to Space Insider, international partnerships under such provisions as the deep space missions and human spaceflight plans will allow Canada to use the enterprises, such as MDA, to achieve these goals.

    10. Italy

Finally, the orbit of the current satellites at the current date in Italy is about 66 satellites, about observation, communications, and navigation. By the year 2030, the space presence in Italy will be increased drastically with the launching of IRIDE (34 satellites) and proposed National Constellation ( ~ 100 satellites) as has been reported.
